May 2011 Addendum and Special Notes
Lot 288:
Note: Louis Hoffman of Vicksburg was a main supplier to the Confederacy and when
Vicksburg fell he was put on trial for arming the insurgents. This rifle was specially built in
.58 caliber rifled with three wide grooves and lands, like a Springfield or Enfield rifle musket,
to shoot a ".58 minnie ball". This was the standard military round of the Civil War but not
popular for sporting/hunting use . Consequently it is very possible this rifle was the
property of a Confederate who would have most probably been an officer due to the quality and
expense of this high-grade rifle.
